Pentecost Sunday - The Forgotten Feast

We celebrate the coming of the Son. Can we even imagine a year without Christmas? Could we envision a spring emptied of Easter?

But what of the coming of the Holy Spirit ?

Pentecost is not the first introduction we have of His person, power and performance.

1. He inspired the Old Testament scriptures 2 Peter 1: 20-21

2. He spoke to Israel in the wilderness Hebrews 3:7-11

3. He was active in the Days of John the Baptist - Luke 1:41

4. He was active in the birth of Jesus Luke 1:35

He is none other than God in the person of the Holy Spirit! A person? - not as in a body as we have - but a person who has:

1. A Mind - Romans 8:27 / He can think

2. Emotions - Ephesians 4:30 / He can feel

3. Will - - 1 Corinthians 12:11 - He has the capacity to want and can exercise discretion in the distribution of His gifts.

By any standard this designates and describes a person who can think, feel and desire.

He is third “person” of the Godhead who reigns One with the Father and The Son - Co-equal, Co- eternal and Co-existing.

To those who do not acknowledge any personhood in the Godhead- How do we rationalize our own personhood - our ability to think, feel and desire? Are we not created in His image?

Pentecost Sunday gives the church an opportunity to give praise and worship to God who is thrice Holy and forevermore exalted above all gods!

This is the monotheistic and majestic God who has made this Self-Revelation.

He is the revealed God

He is the relational God

He is the redeeming God

When He came to Jerusalem after Jesus had ascended to the Father - it was not His maiden mission! No, His holy history is traced throughout PRE- resurrection time.

David prayed the Holy Spirit will stay

Psalm 51:11 NLT

Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.

Mark 12:36. NLT

For David himself, speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, said, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.’

Who am I that I would have to defend His Deity - His eternal existence? We do not worship a God who has to create (morph) Himself into different manifestations in different dispensations.

He is God - Father, Son and Holy Ghost - One God throughout the endless ages.

Peter saw Him as God - Acts 3 - lying to the Holy Spirt was equivalent to lying to God.

John 7:38-39 NLT

“Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’” (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)”

Yes He was given - waiting for the Son to be glorified and return to the Father before He would come and minister to and through the Church until Jesus would return to rapture His church and bring us home!!

So this Sunday we will once more sing:

“Come, Holy Spirit I need Thee

Come, Sweet Spirit, I pray

Come, in Thy strength and Thy Power

Come, in Thine own gentle way.”
